ABOUT MAKE SPACE

Hi, I'm Debbie

The person behind Make Space

I founded Make Space in Chelmsford in 2022 after many years working in fashion.

My design background shapes everything I do at Make Space, from the colours and materials I choose to the activities I create. It’s all about making creativity feel fun, accessible and a little bit special.

I’ve always loved making things.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME

Creativity has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. Before starting Make Space, I worked in the fashion industry in London, which probably explains my love of colour, pattern, beautiful materials and anything a little bit different.

That designer’s eye still goes into everything I do. I spend a lot of time choosing colourways, sourcing materials and putting together combinations that I know will work beautifully, while still giving you plenty of freedom to make something completely your own.

Over the years, I’ve collected beads from all over the world and worked with everything from jewellery and textiles to embroidery, faux and dried flowers.

Eventually, I decided it was time to turn that love of making into something I could share with other people.

HOW MAKE SPACE CAME ABOUT

Making space for creativity.

Make Space grew from a desire to create a friendly, welcoming place where people could come together, try something new and enjoy being creative, without any pressure to already know what they’re doing.

What started as an idea has grown into a wonderful community of makers, with workshops, parties, events and plenty of one-off creative projects.

MY APPROACH

Creativity is for everyone

You don’t need to think of yourself as creative to come to Make Space. Most of my workshops are completely beginner-friendly and I’ll guide you through everything you need to know.

But beginner-friendly doesn’t mean basic.

I’m a bit obsessive about the materials I use. I want you to have a brilliant choice of colours, textures and good-quality components, rather than a handful of standard craft supplies. Whether your style is bright and bold, soft and tonal or somewhere in between, there should be something you love.

I do the sourcing, organising and prep so that when you arrive, you can switch off, get stuck in and enjoy making.

Design background

Years in the fashion industry gave me the eye for colour, materials and detail that I bring to Make Space today.

Bead obsessed

I’ve collected beads from all over the world for more than 20 years. I love finding unusual pieces you won't see everywhere else.

Lover of colour & pattern

Bright, tonal, clashing or calm, I love putting together colourways that give you a beautiful starting point for your own design.

Faux & dried flowers

I love working with faux and dried flowers to create everlasting arrangements and wreaths.

What I love making

Two curved teal hand-drawn arrows pointing down and right

From colourful beaded jewellery and statement pieces, textiles, embroidery and embellishment, as well as seasonal wreaths and floral designs using faux and dried flowers.

Whatever we're making, I carefully choose the materials and colourways beforehand so there's plenty to inspire you, while leaving you free to put your own spin on it.

Everything you see here can also be commissioned and made especially for you. So if you spot something you love, or have an idea for something completely bespoke, just get in touch.
